Media Studies
Media is everywhere. From films and television to social media, podcasts, advertising and AI, our Media Studies curriculum helps students understand the world around them while developing their critical thinking, creativity and communication skills.
Year 7
Students begin by exploring the question: What is media? They create a media collage showcasing their favourite films, games, music, streaming services and other forms of entertainment, helping them recognise the role media plays in their everyday lives.
They then study The Goonies, using the film to explore character analysis, product placement and how media has changed since the 1980s. Students also complete units on advertising and compare traditional radio with modern podcasts, considering how audiences consume media today.
Year 8
In Year 8, students broaden their understanding of the media by exploring current affairs and the major issues shaping today's media landscape. Using engaging discussion-based lessons, they examine topics such as artificial intelligence, the influence of technology, basic political ideas and how news and media can shape public opinion. Lessons encourage students to think critically about the information they consume every day.
Year 9
Students explore the science fiction genre, learning about genre conventions, themes and audience expectations. Through the study of The Matrix, they analyse how science fiction reflects real-world issues while considering topics such as technology, identity and the future. Alongside this, students continue to discuss current media topics and develop their analytical skills through topical discussions.
Year 10
Year 10 builds on the foundations developed in earlier years, with more challenging discussions around current affairs, news, artificial intelligence and the changing media landscape. Students continue to develop their ability to analyse media, evaluate sources and debate contemporary issues while preparing for the transition to the Level 1 BTEC course in Year 11..
Year 11
Students complete the Pearson Level 1 BTEC in Digital Media. They apply the knowledge and skills developed throughout Key Stage 3 to practical media projects, including planning and creating storyboards as part of their coursework. The course develops creativity, planning, communication and production skills while giving students experience of working through a professional-style media project.
Throughout the curriculum, students are encouraged to question, analyse and create media, helping them become informed, thoughtful and responsible consumers and producers of media in an increasingly digital world..
